JAMMU, March 13: Senior Congress official Ashok Bhagat today expressed his deep disappointment at the inability of the BJP government to address the burning issues of J&K by turning a blind eye to the apprehensions and concerns of the people of J&K, especially from Jammu region.
Speaking at a reception on Sunday as part of the distribution of blankets to needy families in Marh constituency, Bhagat said the government lacked an approach based on consistency, clarity, conviction and creating nothing but disorder, causing people to suffer unnecessarily through no fault of their own.
Bhagat said alarming unemployment, rising commodity prices, large-scale divestment of public sector units, attack on social security system like pensions, amendment of labor laws in favor of of companies, outsourcing, massive unbundling of government departments with the elimination of permanent position has caused large-scale resentment among employees/workers in almost all sectors. It has placed a huge burden on working people through the GST and the withdrawal of subsidies on the basics of subsistence is causing immeasurable suffering to the people.
Bhagat expressed concern over repeated attempts to disempower the residents of J&K by coming up with one horrific measure after another. “First, the state was divided and its status downgraded as a union territory, then the delimitation exercise was undertaken with serious shortcomings. The BJP government at the Center did not perform any public service work at J&K. The dual-powered BJP government harassed all sections of society and did nothing itself, but appeared in advertisements claiming the work of the Congress Party as its own.
He accused the BJP of ignoring the aspirations of J&K residents. He said the ruling party had failed to inspire millions of new UTs. The focus is not on development, infrastructure is disappearing and people are being denied basic civilian amenities like electricity and water. He said the BJP government is weakening the rural economy and hereditary crafts and wreaking havoc on the agricultural sector, only to hand over the agricultural sector to the corporate sector.
Bhagat heavily chastised the UT administration and the BJP for their indifferent attitude towards daily bets, necessities and other casual workers and demanded the immediate development and implementation of a regularization policy for them.
Senior members Ashwani Sharma, Suresh Chander, Uttam Lal, Shamsher Singh and Vinod Kumar were also present on the occasion.
