Don’t fall for fraudulent emergency calls – follow FTC advice on how to deal with them

ROHNERT-PARK, California., August 16, 2018 / PRNewswire / – A woman goes shopping and receives a call. The caller claims to be her nephew who appears to be in Cancun, Mexico, in prison. He says he needs bail immediately. The caller uses an urgent tone to emphasize the emergency they are in and the woman is frightened. What should she do? According to the FTC, the first step is to confirm their identity before responding to the alleged emergency. Scammers can try to get quick buck by filing such emergencies which, if successful, can result in victims struggling to make normal monthly payments like their student loans. Ameritech Financial, a document preparation company that helps student loan borrowers apply for federal repayment plans, agrees with the FTC and encourages citizens to learn more about these scammers to avoid unnecessary loss of money.

Back to the initial scenario: the woman and her nephew. The FTC advises a person in their situation to think before acting, as the scammer wants their victims to act quickly. The more she thinks about it, the more she may realize that she is being cheated on. Next, the woman should try to verify her nephew’s identity. She could ask questions that only her nephew knows the answer to and / or contact someone she knows is valid, such as calling her nephew directly or one of his relatives. The FTC is discussing other steps that will help with this type of scam.

Student loan borrowers could encounter fraudulent scams in other ways, such as receiving fraudulent calls or offers from purported nannies, caregivers, tech support, and even online dating partners. While Ameritech Financial cannot advise clients directly on these issues, there is another way they can help: help navigate the complex student loan industry. Ameritech is helping student loan borrowers with high federal student debt apply for federal income-oriented repayment plans (IDRs) that could drastically reduce their monthly payments.
