Seasoned actress Sharmila Tagore turned a year older today, December 8, 2021. The evergreen and talented personality has featured in classics like Aradhana and Amar Prem, enriching the Indian film industry with her memorable performances. As Sharmila Tagore celebrates her birthday today, we’ll have a look at another beautiful aspect of her life outside of cinema – her undying love affair with Mansour Ali Khan Pataudi, aka Tiger Pataudi.

It was in the 60s. She was causing a sensation on the big screen, and he was an outstanding cricketer and captain of the Indian team. She loved Cricket but didn’t know much about it and he hadn’t watched many of its films. This is how the story of Sharmila Tagore and Nawab de Pataudi began. They met through a mutual friend at a post-game night in Delhi in 1965. Tiger was in the city with his team and Sharmila had gone to watch a game. Who knew that this meeting would end with a beautiful story of friendship, mutual respect and camaraderie? They quickly fell in love and, after a four-year courtship, were married in 1969.

The marriage of Sharmila Tagore and Tiger Pataudi is one of equal in all rights. Mansoor Ali Khan was an Oxford graduate with a charming demeanor. His royalty was evident in the way he behaved with grace and poise. Sharmila was a talented artist, having made her film debut at the age of 13, under the guidance and mentorship of none other than Satyajit Ray. The Nawabi elegance of Tiger Pataudi combined with the Bengali heritage of Sharmila Tagore complemented each other and how.

However, there were also differences in their manner. Apparently, many didn’t think Sharmila and Tiger’s relationship would last. If reports are to be believed, the Pataudi Nawabs didn’t think much of Sharmila’s acting profession, and the actress’ Bengali family didn’t think highly of the royal and “forgiving” lifestyle. Pataudis. But, Sharmila and Mansoor were determined to make it through anyway. Additionally, reports claim that before Tiger proposed to Sharmila, the lovebirds made sure he had the approval of both families.

In more ways than one, Sharmila and Tiger’s relationship shattered stereotypes and was maverick. India in the 1960s cannot particularly be called a progressive country. But here is a Bengali Hindu woman who was marrying with the love of her life, a royal Muslim. As much as we like to deny it, religion has always been the elephant in the room when it comes to interfaith weddings. But Sharmila beautifully expressed her thoughts on this matter. According to an article in Scoopwhoop, Sharmila said, “When we decided to get married, we didn’t even know the words secular or community – we were in the throes of a young love; we didn’t know what it was. We weren’t aware of the bigger ramifications because for us the world began and ended with each other. Being together wasn’t much of a deliberate challenge to standards, it just stemmed from an overwhelming desire to be together.

Breaking the glass ceiling didn’t stop with marriage alone. Sharmila was also the first Indian actress to appear in a bikini on a magazine cover, while Pataudi’s Nawab supported and respected her choice. Additionally, at a time when actresses’ shelf life was considered at the time of their marriage, Sharmila continued to star in films even after embracing motherhood.
