New ‘Masters of the Universe’ Live-Action Movie Coming to Netflix

On Friday, The Hollywood Reporter’s Mia Galuppo revealed that a new live-action masters of the universe The film will be coming to Netflix with Kyle Allen Set in the lead role. According to Galuppo’s report, filming for the film is set to begin this summer. It will be co-directed by brothers Adam and Aaron Nee and based on a script written by David Callaham (who also wrote Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).

The film will also be a Mattel Films project. This means that he will have full access to the lore/mythology based on the masters of the universe toy line, but not the original Filmation animated series. I know this might seem like a minor issue, but it’s worth mentioning for anyone who might be lulled into the story not following the exact same canon as their childhood cartoon.

That being said, one thing even the most dedicated masters of the universe fans tend to agree on the subpar quality of the 1987 live-action film. Hopefully, this version is correct. I know next to nothing about Kyle Allen, but you have to assume he’ll do a better job portraying He-Man than Dolph Lundgren.

As for the story, we obviously won’t know anything about it before the end of spring. Hopefully this project is willing to take narrative risks like the Masters of the Universe: Revelations did (which was awesome, no matter what haters say), but also remembers the crazy ideas and mythology that made us love the franchise in the first place.
