Raven Leilani’s novel “Chandelier” being adapted for HBO


One of the hottest books of 2020 gets the HBO treatment.

According to Deadline, actress Tessa Thompson’s production company Viva Maude is teaming up with film studio Gaumont to adapt Raven Leilani’s bestseller, Chandelier, for the TV screen. Leilani’s book was one of the most discussed literary outings of the past year for its candid portrayal of Edie, a young black woman “living a precarious existence in New York”. The novel follows Edie as she leads sex with a white man in an open marriage and finds herself moving in with him, his wife, and their adopted young black daughter in the suburbs. Chandelier became a number one bestseller on the likes of The New York Times‘ and Los Angeles Timesbook of graphics.

Chandelier marks the daring debut of Raven Leilani, a seminal voice for her generation. In her work, which defies categorization, there is a surprisingly singular quality that speaks to the mind of the types of narratives that Viva Maude aims to present – bold, beautifully crafted, unabashedly human, imaginative and unconventional, ”said Thompson in a statement.
